Goods Vehicle Movement Service (GVMS) will go live tomorrow for imports

If you want to test out GVMS before 1 January 2022, you can do so from 29 December 2021.

Before you can so this, you will first have to register via GOV.UK:

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/register-for-the-goods-vehicle-movement-service

If registering a UK based company, you will need the following:

  • Economic Operators Registration and Identification (EORI) number.

  • Corporation tax Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR).

  • The date the company was established.

  • The company’s registered address with HMRC.

Once the application is submitted, you receive a notification indicating that there may be a 5 working delay for the approval to be processed. In fact, the answer should be back in 24 hours.

When you have the GVMS approval, you can request a Good Movement Reference (GMR):

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/get-a-goods-movement-reference

In order to do so, you should ensure that you have the registration of the vehicle that is being used to transport the goods, the crossing details and the associated customs declaration used to cross the UK border, i.e. the import entry number, the transit movement reference number (MRN), etc.
